December Update

Now the leaves are falling, it’s the ideal time to get pruning your trees. Pruning during the dormant period minimizes the risk of sap bleeding, which can leave trees vulnerable to infection. Shape apple and pear trees into a goblet form, this improves air circulation around the branches, promoting healthy growth and fruiting for next season. Fan-trained specimens can also be trimmed to maintain their productivity. We have an excellent selection of tools for the job, from secateurs to extendable loppers that would also make thoughtful Christmas gifts for the gardeners in your life.

Winter is also the best season to plant trees, shrubs, and roses, as long as the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. We offer a wide variety of beautiful options to add year-round interest and structure to your garden. To give your plants the best start, use bonemeal or mycorrhizal rootgrow, both of which are available here at Hope Valley. These help the roots establish, allowing the plant to stabilize over winter and flourish in spring. When planting trees, don’t forget to secure them with a stake and tie to prevent root rock. A short stake angled at 45 degrees into the prevailing wind works well without interfering with the rootball.

Herbaceous perennials can be tidied, cutting back any that don’t have attractive seed heads. Frosted seed heads can add stunning visual interest during winter.  Protect borderline hardy perennials by mulching with a thick layer of well rotted compost or manure around the root zones.

Tender plants should be covered with fleece and plants in pots should be moved to a sheltered location or greenhouse.  Wrapping pots with bubble wrap provides extra root protection and we have all the supplies you will need.

Top dressing borders with compost or manure not only replenishes nurtrients but also improves soil structure, making it easier to work with in the future.  Spread a generous layer on top of the soil and let the worms do the hard work for you, no digging necessary. 

Houseplants

Houseplants also need a little extra attention in the winter.  Ensure they are getting enough light by moving them to brighter spots if needed.  While watering should be reduced during this season, be careful not to let them dry out, especially with central heating.
