February at last!!!!! January always seems to go on forever, however shoots are beginning to peep through and buds on the trees and shrubs are swelling, so although winter isn’t over yet, promising signs of life are there. If you didn’t get round to planting spring bulbs in the autumn and are in need of a burst of colour this spring, the we have many potted bulbs, such as crocus, daffodils, tulips and more in small pots ready to be planted out in the garden or put into pots/planters.
Tip to help you get organised
Organise your seeds in order of their sowing date, then they can be filed tidily by the month that they should be sown in. Check out our selection of vegetable seeds and get organised for the spring.
Shrubs grown for their colourful winter stems, such as Cornus and Salix can be cut back down to the base, to encourage strong new growth and keep their wonderful colour. You can also cut back the old foliage from some of the ornamental grasses to a few centimetres high, before the new growth emerges.
The strappy leaves of Carex grasses should just have the old tatty leaves remove individually. After winter flowering jasmine has finished putting on its show, prune back the previous years growth to about 5cm from the old wood. This will keep it in check and encourage fresh new stems on which it will flower next year, ready to go for the new season.
Compost
It's time to mulch fruit trees and bushes with a good compost, we have plenty in stock if your running low.
Compost is now available to order from our website and we will deliver it to your doorstep.
Don’t mound it up around the actual stem or trunk, just leave a collar around the plant and apply it thickly around the root zone.
Fruit Trees & Shrubs

We still have a wonderful selection of fruit trees and shrubs if you fancy having a go yourself and haven’t already got any.
Protect apricot, nectarine and peach blossom from frosts, but take care to allow pollinating insects to still have access to the flowers.
If required, now is the time to add lime to acid soil in your vegetable plot and then rake it in well, tidying it over and removing all the weeds and any decaying plant matter. Check out our tool range if some of your gardening tools have seen better days.

Many of us are aware of how vital it is to feed our garden birds, but its also just as important that they have a suitable shelter and site for breeding.
With natural habitats such as trees and hedgerows being lost to development and the increase in urban housing, some of our garden birds struggle to find a safe shelter to rear their young.
However we can all do our bit to help and so to better their chances of a successful season why not site a nest box in your garden or outdoor areas. This will provide them with a clean, warm environment to lay their eggs and raise their chicks.
Get Growing
February is a good time to get organised for the coming growing season and if you are looking to purchase a new shed/greenhouse then now is the time to do so. Lead times are at their lowest so within about 4 weeks you could have your shed/greenhouse installed and ready to go for the new season.
